OUR FEBRUARY PROGRAM
Sunday, February 19
3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
Chicago IONS Presents:
José Luis Stevens, Ph.D.
Shamanic Practitioner, Counselor, and International Consultant
"2012 - More Drama Ahead: Opening a Shamanic Toolbox for Navigating the New Year."
The sensitive and perceptive José Stevens joins us again
for another venture into "reading" the new year from a perspective that
gives the year a unique personality and set of traits. This will mark José's 3rd year of presenting to us, and we are delighted to welcome him back. Last year José alerted us to expect widespread aggressiveness and violence, and also to expect a larger than usual influence of water. We hadn't yet heard of the "Arab Spring", much less the "wilding" in England, repressive actions in many countries, and a widespread sense of resentment, anger, and fear that did come about in 2011. And the floods in Pakistan and other areas were particularly devastating, including our own powerful floods and hurricane damage all the way north into Vermont.
In this year's combined “trends” and “learning new skills” talk, we will
specifically review the personality of 2012, the positive poles, the
negative poles, and what to look out for. The coming year will be like having a roommate "twenty four/seven" throughout the year, so it is good to know how to get along. We will also examine practical methods to navigate these intense times of great change, and will develop a toolbox of shamanic methods to feel good instead of anxious as the drama unfolds on every side.
About José Stevens:
José Luis Stevens Ph.D. is the president and co-founder (with wife Lena) of Power Path Seminars, an international school and consulting firm dedicated to the study and application of shamanism and indigenous wisdom to business and everyday life.
Jose completed a ten year apprenticeship with a Huichol Maracame (shaman) in the Sierras of Central Mexico, and his doctoral dissertation focused on the interface between shamanism and western psychological counseling.
Suggested Donation: $10 Doors Open: 2:45 p.m.
Registration and light refreshments until 3:15 p.m.
Program begins promptly at 3:15 p.m.
Location:Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago
at the intersection of Howard, Lincoln, and Skokie Hwy.
(Free parking is available in the building's lot, as well as in lot next door,(a small strip mall is just east of the building), and at the former "Coffee Beanery" lot, just across Lincoln.)

Conversations That Matter...An ongoing open-participation discussion group
We support the creation of small subgoups dedicated to various topics, and we encourage interested participants to host a sub-group. Possible areas of interest include books, films, poetry, meditation, remote healing, and so forth. On the fourth Sunday of most months one such group of interested participants meet in the home of Reva Schneider, in Skokie, from 2 pm to 5 pm. This group has evolved from a book study group into a stimulating Conversation & Discussion group. The topics are brought up by the participants, and materials (such as copies of articles, etc.) can be brought to the meeting by anyone as an aid to conversation. Participants usually bring a small "pot-luck" snacks like fruit, cheese, and so forth. Contact Reva via email at least a week in advance to confirm your attendance.

September 18, 2011: Theodore Richards:
Cosmosophia: Cosmology, Mysticism, and the Birth of a New Myth The unique challenges of today’s world can be solved neither through progress and technology nor a return to the ideas of the past—or even through mere ideas at all—but by a deep mystical re-connection to our world and the creative, imaginative process of telling a new myth that integrates our mystical traditions and modern science.
Most of our decisions are based upon a worldview that devalues the natural world, tells us we are alienated from one another and disconnected from the cosmos.
Richards proposes a new mythic and symbolic framework, “cosmosophia,” which integrates the insights of the cosmologies and mystical philosophies of the wisdom traditions and modern science. Any worldview is based on certain basic assumptions about reality that a particular culture makes. In modernity, these assumptions or core metaphors have led us to see our world as corrupted or dead. Cosmosophia is a new set of metaphors upon which a worldview can be created that treats the cosmos as ensouled, alive, or sacred.
Using the most recent insights of science as well as drawing from various mystical traditions, we will work toward creating a new myth based upon the symbolic framework of cosmosophia. .
About our Presenter:
Theodore Richards, PhD, is a poet, writer, and religious philosopher. He is a long time student of the Taoist martial art of Bagua and hatha yoga and has traveled, worked and studied in 25 different countries, including the South Pacific, the Far East, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Theodore has received degrees from the University of Chicago, The California Institute of Integral Studies, Wisdom University, and the New Seminary, where he was ordained. Richards is the founder and executive director of The Chicago Wisdom Project.
August 21, 2011: A World Café Event
We shared a synergistic exchange of ideas within the Emerging View of creative communication.
Our Traditional Concept of communication is based on a relatively linear conception: Talk leads to Action.... But an Emerging View, embodied in the World Café experience, is that genuine conversation: sharing insights, listening deeply and giving feedback, in a safe and welcoming setting, can create a powerful, open, and honest experience that can lead to new and creative endeavors.
Our Facilitators:
Reva Schneider is a board certified psychiatric nurse with 28 years of experience and also a LCPC with a private practice in Skokie. She has been an active member of Chicago Ions for the past 20 years traveling the path with her fellow seekers.
Karen McGinnis has worked extensively in the fields of Addictions, Crisis Management, Suicide Prevention, Meditation and Community Education. She currently teaches the "Point Zero Method" of process painting, created by Michele Cassou, at various locations in the Chicagoland area.
We shared a synergistic exchange of ideas within the Emerging View of creative communication.
- Have you ever wondered how you might contribute to a global dialogue that takes us beyond our outworn images?
- What might be the emerging vision of our time that could offer a template for a conscious humanity?

March 20, 2011: - Burma VJ
2010 Academy Award Nominee
Remarkably timely, in view of tumultuous protests rocking many governments in North Africa and the Middle East, this documentary was told from the perspective of underground video journalists in Burma in 2007. They risked their lives to bring to the free world, and particularly to their own countrymen, secretly filmed reports of huge protests led by thousands of Buddhist monks, and of the repressive response that their government wanted to keep hidden from the world and its own people.
We broke into small groups for discussion following the film, reflecting on humanity's larger story and our own human potential.

A demo on healing and creating oneness via the three centers of intelligence which form the core of the Enneagram's teaching, Head, Heart, and Body/Gut was a powerful example of the benefits of cultivating inner communication pathways.
About the Presenter:
Ruth Landis is a Body-Psychotherapist and executive coach utilizing body/mind techniques, the Enneagram, creativity, energy-work, nature based ceremony and spirituality. She designs and facilitates workshops and trainings nationally, and is especially gifted in "making seen the unseen".
